Research

Dr. Schwartz’s research has spanned mathematical logic, fuzzy logic, and formal methods in artificial intelligence, including nonmonotonic reasoning. He formerly participated in a project for the US Army involving case-based reasoning and data mining for computer network intrusion detection. In addition he has done software development and information security research for the US Navy. He most recently has taught courses on databases, Java programming, and traditional artificial intelligence (heuristic search algorithms and knowledge representation and reasoning). His current interests include applications of nonmonotonic reasoning for mission planning and replanning of autonomous agents, especially driverless vehicles (cars, trucks, buses). He also is developing a new theory of possibility, inspired by his former engagement with fuzzy systems, with a further emphasis on planning.
