  • Introduction to IoT: IoT definition, Use-cases and Business Opportunities.
  • IoT Architecture: Objects Layer, Object Abstraction Layer, Service Management Layer, Application Layer, Business Layer.
  • IoT Elements: Identification, Sensing, Communication, Computation, Services, Semantics.
  • IoT Common Standards: ZigBee, BLE, WiFi, LoRa, LPWAN, IPV6, AMPQ, MQTT.
  • Support to the IoT: Big Data Analytics, Cloud computing, and Fog computing.
  • QoS Criteria: Reliability, Mobility, Performance, Scalability, Management, Interoperability.
  • Security and Privacy in IoT: Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability, Privacy.

Prerequisites

Background knowledge in wireless communication, networking and embedded systems is preferred.

• Lectures: All lecture notes and related materials are posted on Canvas. Students are encouraged to attend classes. They are expected to mute their microphone when attending the zoom class lectures unless the student has a question. For more details, please refer to.
  
  
• Paper presentations: There will be two paper presentations for each student during the sememser. The associated papers are chosen from top confereneces: Mobicom 2020, CCS 2020, and Sensys 2020. The two purposes of these paper presentations are: (1) demonstrate the current trends and the newest applications in the filed of IoT, (2) open the eyes of the students and motivate their interests’ on thinking new ideas that will benefit to our lives.
  
  
• Survey paper: There will be three survey papers to be written for each student during the semsemer. The two purposes of survey papers are: (1) give students’ opportunities to dig deep in the associated topics in IoT, (2) improve students’ writting skills on research paper. The length of the survey paper is 4-5 pages. The IEEE conference templates are used as writing templetes.
  
  
• Projects: There will be three projects during the semester. The purpose of these projects is to connect theory with practice by giving students practical experience in IoT. All the projects should be done individually by the students. Each student will submit a word report to Canvas for each project to demonstrate their completion. All the projects will require substantial time commitment. Students will be given plenty of time to complete them.
  
  
• Final Project: we should have a final project to encourage students to implement real IoT applications. Students should collaborate with each other to complete the final projects on give hardwards, such as Rasperry Pi, TelosB, and different types of sensors. However, due to pandemic, that is impoissble to achieve. Hence, the final projects are cancelled for the course this semester.
  
  

Grading Policy

• Missed Exam Policy: A missed exam will be recorded as a grade of zero.
  
  
• Late Penalty Policy: Both survey papers and projects are considered as assignments. Unless otherwise specified, assignments have two due times. Assignments turned in before the first due time are considered in time. Assignments turned in before the second due time are considered late and will be penalized by 10 %. Assignments will NOT be accepted after the second due time. Usually, the first due time is the beginning of a lecture and the second due time is the beginning of the next lecture.

• Grading: Grading will be based on the weighted average as evaluation procedures and the following scale will be used weighted (average is S in 100 scale). This scale indicates minimum guaranteed grades. Under certain circumstances (e.g., an unreasonably hard exam), the scales may be adjusted.

Attendance Policy

• The zoom automatically records students' attendance period during class sessions. Besides, students are responsible for all materials presented in class. In rare cases, such as medical needs or jury duty, absences may be excused with appropriate documentation. Students should let the instructor know in advance, when possible, and submit the documentation. Student should make up for any materials missed due to absences.

• Assignments/projects/exams are to be done individually, unless specified otherwise. It is a violation of the Academic Honor Code to take credit for the work done by other people. It is also a violation to assist another person in violating the Code (See the FSU Student Handbook for penalties for violations of the Honor Code). The judgment for the violation of the Academic Honor Code will be done by the instructor and a third party member (another faculty member in the Computer Science Department not involved in this course). Once the judgment is made, the case is closed and no arguments from the involved parties will be heard. Examples of cheating behaviors include:
  • Discuss the solution for a homework question
  • Copy programs for programming assignments.
  • Use and submit existing programs/reports on the World Wide Web as written assignments.
  • Submit programs/reports/assignments done by a third party, including hired and contracted.
  • Plagiarize sentences/paragraphs from others without giving the appropriate references. Plagiarism is a serious intellectual crime and the consequences can be very substantial.

Accommodation for Disabilities

• Students with disabilities needing academic accommodations should: (1) register with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC); and (2) bring a letter to the instructor indicating the need for accommodation and what type.
