Textbook and Class Materials

• Required textbook: D. Patterson and J. Hennessy. Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface. Fifth Edition.

Prerequisites

• COP3330 (Object Oriented Programming)
• MAD2104 (Discrete Mathematics I).

• Know how to calculate various simple measures of computer performance
• Understand number representations: for both integer and floating-point numbers, be able to encode a value in a specified number representation and decode the value from a specified number representation. Meanwhile, be able convert number representations between different representation systems.
• Understand algorithms for binary integer arithmetic operations including addition and subtraction.
• Understand MIPS assembly language: be able to read and write programs consisting one or more functions using the MIPS assembly language.
• Understand the MIPS instruction set: be able to encode and decode MIPS instructions.
• Know how to design combinational logic, including decoders, multiplexors, and simple arithmetic-logic units (ALU), by using basic logic gates.
• Know how to design sequential logic elements, including latches, flip-flops, and registers, and know how to describe characteristics of larger memory elements.
• Understand finite state machines; be able to draw state diagrams, implement next state functions, and design and implement finite state machines using basic logic elements.
• Know how to design a datapath and control unit for a processor using a single cycle implementation; be able to design and implement a simple processor using basic elements such as combinational logic and state elements to provide additional functionality.
• Be able to determine when instructions go through the various stages of a simple in-order pipeline.
• Be able to determine when caches accesses hit or miss and how their state is updated.
• Be able to determine how virtual addresses are translated to physical addresses through the use of a page table and translation-lookaside buffer.

Assignments

Assignments will be given along the lectures and they need to be turned in to Canvas. The assignments without coding can be handwritten. However, you must either be able to scan the assignment or take a readable photograph. Note: for most of the assignment, you can type your answers and turn in an ASCII text file.

Grading Policy

• Missed Exam Policy: A missed exam will be recorded as a grade of zero.
  
  
• Late Penalty Policy: Both survey papers and projects are considered as assignments. Unless otherwise specified, assignments have two due times. Assignments turned in before the first due time are considered in time. Assignments turned in before the second due time are considered late and will be penalized by 10 %. Assignments will NOT be accepted after the second due time. Usually, the first due time is the beginning of a lecture and the second due time is the beginning of the next lecture.

Attendance Policy

The zoom automatically records students' attendance period during class sessions. Besides, students are responsible for all materials presented in class. In rare cases, such as medical needs or jury duty, absences may be excused with appropriate documentation. Students should let the instructor know in advance, when possible, and submit the documentation. Student should make up for any materials missed due to absences.

• Assignments/projects/exams are to be done individually, unless specified otherwise. It is a violation of the Academic Honor Code to take credit for the work done by other people. It is also a violation to assist another person in violating the Code (See the FSU Student Handbook for penalties for violations of the Honor Code). The judgment for the violation of the Academic Honor Code will be done by the instructor and a third party member (another faculty member in the Computer Science Department not involved in this course). Once the judgment is made, the case is closed and no arguments from the involved parties will be heard. Examples of cheating behaviors include:
  • Discuss the solution for a homework question
  • Copy programs for programming assignments.
  • Use and submit existing programs/reports on the World Wide Web as written assignments.
  • Submit programs/reports/assignments done by a third party, including hired and contracted.
  • Plagiarize sentences/paragraphs from others without giving the appropriate references. Plagiarism is a serious intellectual crime and the consequences can be very substantial.

Accommodation for Disabilities
