Assignment # 1
Up and Running
Journals due: No later than Tuesday, May 25th. The rest of the assignments
require that the machines be working so don't fall behind.
- Build two working PCs and a working Sun SPARC on your team's table in your
assigned table in one of the SysAdmin labs (the back rooms in 104A LOV and
the back rooms in the Majors lab).
- Install Windows NT and RedHat Linux 5.2 on your two PCs.
- Install Solaris 7 on your Sun SPARC.
- Build three working 10baseT network cable connections between the Ethernet
hub and your three computers and connect your computers to the network.
Notes on the installations
Windows NT install
You will be either doing a CD-ROM install using the backpack parallel port
CD-ROM drive or, if you are fortunate, the CD-ROM drive internal to the machine.
Some decisions you should be aware of while doing the install:
- You will need NT boot floppies and the NT server CD-ROM.
- FYI - the boot floppies were created by running off of the CD-ROM the
following:
- Select NTFS file system type rather than FAT.
- Select "per server" licensing with 15 connections.
- Use your team number for the domain name (e.g., "team1").
- Have your machine be set up as a Primary Domain Controller.
- Use one of the IP addresses assigned to you, a netmask of 255.255.255.0,
a gateway/router IP address of 192.168.0.1 (Majors Lab) or 192.168.1.1 (104
LOV) and a name server address of 128.186.121.10.
RedHat 5.2 install
Follow the instructions given on RedHat's web page: www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/RHL-5.2-Installation-Guide-HTML/manual
Some decisions you should be aware of while doing the install:
- You will need RedHat boot floppies.
- FYI - the boot floppies were created from the RedHat CD-ROM via:
- cd redhat5.2/images
- dd if=boot.img of=/dev/fd0
- dd if=supp.img of=/dev/fd0
- You will be doing an anonymous FTP install. The host name for the FTP install
is "redhat.cs.fsu.edu" and the directory is "/redhat5.2".
- Use one of the IP addresses assigned to you, a netmask of 255.255.255.0,
a gateway/router IP address of 192.168.0.1 (Majors Lab) or 192.168.1.1 (104
LOV) and a name server address of 128.186.121.10.
Solaris install
The Solaris install will be done using an external Sun SCSI CD-ROM drive and
the Solaris 7 CD-ROM. Simply boot from the cdrom by issuing the command "boot
cdrom" from the Sun's EEPROM program and follow the instructions. Some
decisions you should be aware of while doing the install:
- You will need the Solaris 7 CD-ROM.
- Use one of the IP addresses assigned to you, a netmask of 255.255.255.0,
a gateway/router IP address of 192.168.0.1 (Majors Lab) or 192.168.1.1 (104
LOV) and a name server address of 128.186.121.10.
Make sure that you document for your journal all the steps you go through,
following the journal/diary guidelines we discussed in class and available for
review on the class home page. Please share the workload so that all team members
get experience with all aspects of the work! Don't forget to assign your work
percentages to yourself and your other teammates in your journal.
You have people available to help. To get the RedHat boot floppies, the NT media
(NT boot floppies, backpack CD-ROM drive, NT server CD-ROM) and the Solaris
7 CD-ROM you will need to set up a time with one of the following people:
- Damon Snyder (snyder@cs.fsu.edu)
- Scott Daniels (sdaniels@cs.fsu.edu)
- Jeff Bauer (jtbauer@cs.fsu.edu)
