VirtualBox guest display is too small to use

You'll need to install guest additions for that guest. This adds various restricted features to the guest OS. To do this, go to the menubar of the VM and you'll find an option that mounts the guest additions as a disk image. From here just install (as root) the included software like normal.

If you don't want to bother with this or are just doing this to get the VM setup you can always just ssh into the guest OS. Since everything you need to do is text driven anyway, this will save you some time and effort. (note, ssh does work with the graphical "make menuconfig" for those curious)

Kernel 4.2.0 is no longer availible from www.kernel.org

Just use the most recent 4.2.x source tree. It's unlikely the patches are going to have a wide impact on anything, especially what you'll need it for.
