Formatting Instructions
All documents (Summaries and Detailed reports) must meet the following formatting and other requirements.
Summaries
- 1 inch margins on all sides. Please check the margins in the hardcopy manually before submission.
- Letter size paper (8.5 inches by 11 inches). In particular, do not set the paper size to A4.
- 12 point Times New Roman font. The title should be 14 point bold-face Times New Roman font.
- Single spacing (for MS Word, line spacing 1.15 will do).
- The title should be centered. It should be followed by an empty line followed by your name, which should also be centered. All other text should be fully justified on the left and right margins.
- You should proof-read your paper and spell-check it to ensure that there are no typographical errors. You report will be considered unsatisfactory if thereare many typographical errors. Please run a spell check on your document finally, before turning it in. You may also wish to use MS Word, and correct any error pointed out by the grammer checker.
- Do not waste space using excessive empty spaces.
- For example, do not use excessive indentation. For example, bulleted lists are usually indented. It is OK to use bulleted lists occassionally in the detailed report. However, only a few lines should occur in such lists.
- Note that the one inch margin applies to the text. If you give a bottom margin of one inch for the page number, and the text is higher than one inch from the bottom, then I will consider the format as incorrect.
- Your writing should have technical substance to it. Avoid wasting space on other things. For example, do not call some research as "interesting". This does not have any technical substance to it. Do not include biographical information about a professor, such as the university from which the professor graduated, etc.
Detailed Reports
- The title should be: Summary of the talk by Dr. XYZ, where XYZ should be replaced by the name of the professor.
- There should be no bulleted lists in a summary.
- You should have at least 25 lines of text (excluding the title and your name).

References .- Section titles must be in 12 point font. The should be preceded and followed by a blank line. Sections must be numbered in Arabic numerals. The references section should not be numbered.
- References must by cited in the main text using the reference number in square brackets, such as [2].

SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing , to get an idea of how to write.- Example of formatting and other instructions.
